Pleco / Bristlenose Species Profile:
Common Name: Pleco / Bristlenose Pleco
Species name: Various
Species Group: Catfish
Origin: South America
Maximum Size: Calico long fin Bristle nose - Approx 15cm
Diet:
Plecos: A varied diet is crucial, consisting of high-quality algae wafers as a staple, supplemented with fresh vegetables like cucumber, and protein sources such as sinking pellets or frozen foods. This ensures they receive a balanced intake of nutrients for optimal health and coloration.
Bristlenose pleco: While also needing algae wafers and vegetables, bristlenose plec's benefit significantly from a higher proportion of plant-based foods in their diet to support their algae-grazing tendencies and overall well-being. Offer a variety of blanched vegetables like spinach, lettuce, and green beans regularly, alongside algae wafers, with occasional small amounts of protein.
Ideal Water temp: 22 - 26 degrees c
PH: Generally 7.0 -> 7.5 (Please check each species or L number individually as they can vary, by sub species)
Temprement:
Plecos: Generally, common plecos are peaceful towards other large fish but can become territorial towards other bottom-dwelling fish, especially other plecos, as they mature and establish their space. Due to their size and potential territoriality, they are best housed singly or with significantly larger, robust tank mates in appropriately sized aquariums.
Bristlenose Plecos: Bristlenose plecos are typically peaceful and community-friendly fish, readily coexisting with a wide range of tank mates. While males can be territorial towards each other, especially in smaller tanks, they are generally much less aggressive than common plecos and can often be kept in groups if sufficient hiding places are provided.
TNT Notes:
The above notes are generic so please research the L number or name specifically prior to purchase to ensure compatability with your tank, other fish and water parameters.
