Electric Blue Acara Species Profile:
Common Name: Electric Blue Acara
Species name: Andinoacara pulcher "Electric Blue" (this is a selectively bred color morph of the Blue Acara)
Species Group: Cichlid
Origin: Selectively bred (original species from Trinidad and Tobago, and parts of South America including Venezuela and Colombia)
Maximum Size: 15-18 cm (6-7 inches)
Diet: Electric Blue Acaras are omnivores with a preference for meaty foods. In the wild, the original species feeds on small invertebrates, insects, and some plant material. In the aquarium, they should be fed a high-quality varied diet consisting of cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented frequently with live or frozen foods such such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, and chopped earthworms. Vegetable matter can also be offered periodically.
Ideal Water temp: 22-29°C
PH: 6.5 -> 7.5 (This fish has been kept in PH 7.4)
Temperament:
Electric Blue Acaras are generally peaceful to semi-aggressive cichlids, known for their relatively docile nature compared to many other cichlids. They can be kept singly or in pairs. While they are usually tolerant of similarly sized, robust community tank mates, they can become somewhat territorial during breeding or if housing multiple males in a smaller tank. They are best kept with other medium to large, non-aggressive fish that can hold their own. A well-decorated tank with caves, rocks, and driftwood will help establish territories and reduce aggression.
