Gold Arowana Species Profile:

Common Name: Gold Arowana

Species name: Scleropages formosus

Species Group: Arowana (Bonytongue family – Osteoglossidae)

Origin: Southeast Asia – Malaysia & Indonesia.

Maximum Size: Approx 75–90cm

Diet:

Gold Arowanas are carnivorous surface predators. In captivity they thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet including high-quality floating carnivore pellets, prawns, mussels, lancefish, whitebait, crickets, and mealworms. Some keepers also feed chopped fish or shrimp. Juveniles should be fed smaller portions multiple times per day, while adults can be fed once daily. Avoid excessive fatty feeder fish to prevent health issues.

Ideal Water temp: 24 – 30 degrees c

PH: 6.0 -> 7.5

Temperament:

Gold Arowanas are territorial and semi-aggressive, especially as they mature. They are best kept alone or with other large, robust tank mates in very large aquariums. Smaller fish will almost certainly be eaten. They are powerful jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential. Due to their eventual size and swimming behaviour, they require extremely large aquariums (typically 6–8ft minimum) with strong filtration and pristine water quality.

Highly prized for their metallic golden scales and majestic swimming style, Gold Arowanas are considered one of the most iconic and valuable freshwater fish in the hobby. They are intelligent, recognise their owners, and can live for 15–20+ years when properly cared for.
