L177 - Golden Nugget Pleco Species Profile:

Common Name: L177 - Golden Nugget Pleco

Species name: Baryancistrus xanthellus (L177 is a specific collection number identifying a particular pattern/location variant)

Species Group: Armored Catfish (Loricariidae - Pleco)

Origin: South America (Rio Xingu basin, Brazil)

Maximum Size: Approx 20-25 cm (8-10 inches)

Diet: L177 Golden Nugget Plecos are primarily herbivorous/detritivorous, with a significant need for a diet rich in vegetable matter and biofilm. In their natural habitat, they scrape diatoms and micro-organisms from rocks and driftwood. In the aquarium, their diet should consist mainly of high-quality sinking wafers, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and driftwood for grazing. Protein sources should be offered sparingly through foods like spirulina-enriched brine shrimp or bloodworms.

Ideal Water temp: 26 - 30 degrees C

PH: 6.5 -> 7.5

Temprement:

L177 Golden Nugget Plecos are generally peaceful towards other fish species, making them suitable for community tanks with robust tank mates. However, they can be territorial with other plecos or similar bottom-dwelling fish, especially those of the same genus or species, particularly when food or prime hiding spots are concerned. Provide plenty of caves, rocks, and driftwood to establish territories and offer security. They require excellent water quality with strong filtration and good oxygenation, mimicking their fast-flowing river origins.
