Malawi Peacock Cichlid Species Profile:
Common Name: Malawi Peacock Cichlid
Species name: Aulonocara sp.
Species Group: African Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi, East Africa.
Maximum Size: Approx 10–15cm (males larger and more colourful than females)
Diet:
Malawi Peacocks are omnivores with a preference for protein-based foods. In captivity they thrive on high-quality cichlid pellets, granules, and flakes designed for African cichlids. Supplement with frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and krill. Avoid high-fat foods and excessive bloodworm, as this can cause digestive issues. A balanced diet helps enhance their vibrant colours.
Ideal Water temp: 24 – 27 degrees c
PH: 7.5 -> 8.5 (They require hard, alkaline water)
Temperament:
Malawi Peacock Cichlids are considered moderately aggressive but are generally less aggressive than Mbuna cichlids. Males can be territorial, especially during breeding, and will display intense colouration when competing or courting females. Best kept in a spacious aquarium with plenty of rockwork to break up territories.
They do well in species-only setups or mixed African cichlid tanks with other similarly tempered species. Avoid keeping multiple dominant males of the same colour strain unless the tank is very large.
Known for their electric blues, fiery reds, yellows, and multi-coloured patterns, Malawi Peacocks are a show-stopping centrepiece fish for any African cichlid aquarium.
